Small things make a big difference

After another day of speaking with individuals who are supervised by Probation, I am reminded that there is continued enthusiasm from them in terms of providing comments and feedback to help us to improve our work.

There are some very simple things that can make a significant difference in terms of the quality of the supervisory relationship.
For instance a simple question of "how are you?" by your Probation Officer showed that there was interest in the individual rather than just monitoring.  I have found that there is a want for quality one to one time with the Probation Officer/Offender Manager/Offender Supervisor because of the importance that is placed on this relationship.  It is the personal interaction that is valued due to the potential it has for supporting change.

There is no formula for stopping re-offending and it can be a complex combination of individual and external factors that combine, at the right time, to contribute to desisting.  However, simple gestures or approaches can go a long way in supporting desistance and if we increase the number of these simple approaches then it could increase the likelihood of supporting an individual into desisting. Of course this is an oversimplification, but I think that it does have merit and it is worth further exploration.
